Autumn has settled seemingly overnight.
This morning I awoke to see mist hovering above the river in the valley, winding through the blue-green landscape like a giant white serpent. The ash, oaks and hawthorns scattered thinly along the roadsides are glowing with golden and red hues and the odd pink gum leaf is apparent, but the majority of the bush remains its usual delicate greyish green.
The bark peels off the trunks of the manna gums in long brown ribbons, catching in the forks of the branches and creating wonderful natural sculptures silhouetted against the sky.

The air has a bite to it and suddenly we are reaching for our woolly hats and scarves. In the evenings we light and gather around the fire, nibbling fresh walnuts from a friend’s tree. Surely it was only two weeks ago I was wearing a sleeveless dress and sandals?
I feel much more connected to the earth and seasons here. At the city house we had central heating which cocooned us from the elements. Very comforting and, it must be said, addictive, but I am enjoying the nip in the air and the smell of woodsmoke in the house. The children have happily taken on the new experience of collecting kindling and making sure the basket by the fire is full of logs.

You're a word artist. I felt like I was right there. What a warm, comforting, happy place to be.
these photos are fucking awesome!!! i love the 1st one, but next 2 rock too. seriously beautiful landscape!!!!
I, too, am loving the change of the seasons, and embracing these cooler temps, the wild wind and skies! But you put it so much more beautifully than I can manage.
Seeing the unfolding of autumn at the other side of the world whilst my garden is gently waking up and displaying a perfusion of early flowers, is both quite strange and amazing.
Probably less than 2 weeks ago S when you were wearing that sleeveless dress and sandals... I think because our summer extended itself into the first month of autumn... We over here in the 'burbs are feeling it too... The cat has gone back to making the heater her first port of call in the mornings. She has felt the cold seeping into her old bones and wants the warm... But I do love this time of the year it would be my favorite... Those clear sunny days and the cool evenings - I do love those cool evenings and snuggling under the doona rather than having it constantly folded at the bottom of the bed as it has been for the last few months...
I briefly mentioned this somewhere in amongst my whining the other day - that in the space of a day or two we really changed seasons. The doonas are out and I'm a happy woman.
* love the red leaves, who says gum trees don't follow seasons?
* as kim says, it changed overnight up here in sydney, too. We don't have heaters out yet, but the cat is back indoors at night (and on my feet right now)
* I was a kindling kid. It makes you connect to what is needed for - well, just a sense of what is needed, is all.
it sounds like heaven.
I love the fall...
Glorious photos. It's cold in the city but not misty cold just yet!
Autumn and winter are only good in the country. The city becomes a miserable place in winter. What a fabulous place you live in!
It looks amazing. Certainly don't see anything like that on the other side of town. We are trying to keep in contact with the elements by walking to and from school but I must admit that the car keys are out when it's windy and raining. Had our first fire this evening and the house still smells of woodsmoke, mmmm.
As others have said, your photos are beautiful. I love the view and the one with the walnuts. I also second Wren's comment that it is quite strange to think that it is autumn in Australia, while here in Canada I am awaiting full Spring.
gorgeous photos, like the rest have said ...
i never knew you lived south of the equator! how peculiar to realize that we are all living through different seasons as we speak ... this morning as i type, i am enjoying the first drizzle of rain of this spring!!
Gorgeous photos, makes me want to travel there. We are just moving into summer in our hemisphere. We've also made stuff we see too.

Stunning photographs...and your description carried me away, if but for a moment.
The first photograph looks like a watercolour painting that someone would hang above their couch. Luckily girl, you have it framed by your window.
I love the changing of the season. Here, the grass is turning green and my tulips are reaching out of the ground.
And I must say, I'm quite jealous of you not keeping your home a "perfect" temperature. Our youngest son has horrible allergies -- we can't even open door and let in a breeze. It's rather cumbersome.
beautiful pix--weird that you've got changing leaves while up in the No. Hemisphere we're waiting for tulips to bloom...
bizarro--the comment box pretended it spit out my wv and then posted my comment 3x! Ah, technology...
Heaven! It looks like heaven. I love fall. And spring. And summer. And winter. I think I love most the changing of the seasons. It's so refreshing to experience the change. My daffodils are up and the cherry blossoms are exploding. The japanese maple leaves are unfurling.
Mmmmmm, I love the smell and feel of a wood fire. Ours is a gas log poser. Convenient but not nearly as aesthetically pleasing.
Such a beautiful post. I have to say I am delighted to see blossom and magnolia and narcissi here, but it's also lovely to contrast this with autumn on the other side of the world.
In fact, as I took Thomas to warm-up for the cricket season today and we drove past my favourite stretch of the Thames, we reckoned that now is about the most colourful time for the planet if you were looking at it from the clouds.
Pure poetry. Beautiful!
It always amazes me that while summer is just around the bend here, elsewhere it's long gone.
I prefer spring and summer because of our gardens, but I do love watching the trees change in autumn. We have 3 Red Maples in our backyard that make it even more enjoyable.
I miss having a woodburning fireplace. We left ours behind in Virginia (attached to the wall) and now we only have a stinky old propane wanna-be.
This was so compelling, I ran downstairs and made a cuppa tea! I'm raising my cup to you right now - It's something herby and cosy.
Enjoy the best season of the year. It's spring here, and everything is popping - my crabapple burst forth with leaves just today!
Your words are just magical - despite the sudden arrival of spring in my part of the world, I can almost feel the autumn chill from you post. Delightful.
your last sentences, the kids makes sure the basket is full...
I want your kids!!
I have become addicted to the shape and colours of Gum leaves since moving to Oz. They are soooo elegant aren't they?
