Let me preface this post by drawing your attention to its title. And also by saying Mr Soup and I are both sick. He has a shocking cold and sounds all stuffed up; I have a nasty cough and my voice is all deep and husky like.
Okay.
Scene: Our house. 1.20 pm, Friday.
The phone rings. I answer it.
Me: Hello?
Man: Hello. Is that Jane?
Me (politely): No, I'm sorry. What number did you ring?
Man: Um, I don't have it in front of me right now. I'm after Jane Smith.
Me: No, no Jane here. I think you have the wrong number.
Man: Sorry to trouble you. Bye.
Me: That's alright. Goodbye.
I hang up and go about my business for, oh, thirty seconds.
The phone rings again. I answer it.
It's my husband.
He says Did I just ring you?!

Ah...
So who's Jane? :D
A client of his.
She lives locally so has the same first few digits as us in her telephone number. He started dialling and then continued to dial our own number out of sheer habit.
Funny.
I can relate! I called my sister - who I've known for 27years and was chatting away to her when I realised that she didn't know who she was talking to - so I said "you don't know who this is - do you?" and she replied "I know I should know the voice is familiar..."
V. funny! You just gave me a very good laugh.
I am laughing. H still answers his phone when I call, "Hello, this is H LastName..." in case I wasn't sure, I guess.
I've done this! And then argued that oh yes, they certainly WERE the person I was calling!
I have been with my husband since 1990. Some days it feels like it can't be that long, other days it feels like forever.
That's a great story! In defense of the both of you, phones sometimes make people sound different anyhow... though... nineteen years.... I'm sure you've spent a good deal of time on the phone together!
Get well soon :)
Very Funny!!
Now that is funny.
oh my goodness. I love it!
Smiling quizzically!
We have just celebrated nine yrs together. I can see us doing the same next week let alone ten yrs from now!
Hee hee .. it's funny how your head is in a different place when you are at work.
That's very funny :D
Great story.
Simon has three brothers and they all used to sound exactly the same on the phone. When they went home at Xmas to their Mum's (when we were all in our twenties), they would wreak telephonic havoc by speaking to each others' girlfriends and not saying who they were. I learned to be distant & polite until I was sure I was talking to Simon.
Cannot stop laughing. Sounds like something my dad would do.
Plus, I loved how Australian it all sounded.
I laughed so hard I cried over this post! Can't say why, but it was too good. Thanks for the story!
My mum, my sister and I all sound alike on the phone. People would call and think we were each other. I now live on the other side of the world so i don't have that problem anymore.
