Flashback Friday: inaugural entry

Me & Mum 1966

Me and Mum, 1966. Passport photo to emigrate to Australia. From the olden days when children travelled on the mother's passport. (Do I look terrified?!)

Looking at this picture tonight as I uploaded it, I realised my mother was 34 when this shot was taken. A good few years younger than I am today.

And it gave me the same feeling I had when Son #1 started school and I became A Mum at the School Gate.

Well first up, you look absolutely ADORABLE.

Secondly, your mum has that 'mum' look about her - similar to that of Bec's mum in her post a few weeks back. It's a weird concoction of fierce pride, protection and that inexplicable expression of the promise of a new life to be lived and the excitement at being a part of it.

Lovely photo. And your mum and mine could be sisters, I swear! They have such similar features. I'll have to find a photo of mine when she was younger.

Do you think you resemble her?
I sort of do - but I'm no good at that...

Lovely photo, S!

I was a little sad the first day C went to school and was whining to my mother about how I didn't feel old enough to have a school-kid...

at which point my mother gently reminded me that when I started school she was 10 years younger than I am now.

Whoops.

OMGoodness! I remember pictures of you from high school, and that picture of your mother shows so much resemblance! I didn't see it in the (older) pictures I've seen of your mother, so it's so sweet to see! And aren't you just the cutest little thing. Our passport photo from 1971 was similar, only there were 6 children with my mother.

Er - you do look terrified. And Kim has put it more eloquently than I ever could but wasn't your mum a striking looking woman. Beautiful. I am always freaked out by the fact that when Mum was my age now (43) I was already 21. And had six younger brothers and sisters, the youngest of whom was 12. Even she doesn't know how she did it.

All these blondies I'm seeing at the moment! I love looking at mother-daughter photos (that's lucky because that's all I'm going to produce!) Your mum looks so lovely and loving and well, you do look stunned - but a cutie anyway!

And thanks for deciphering the term squiffy the other post as I just read that word in a novel I just finished and while I probably would have worked out its meaning by context it was nice to know it already! So many coincidences like this going on lately in my reading life!

You look so much like your mum now, but nothing like yourself as a baby!

Wow - I see that picture of your mom and really wish I knew her then - she looks like someone I would have enjoyed being friends with and having children together with. It is funny the impression we can have of people just from photos. She just seems like she would be a kindred spirit to me. Smart, down to earth, funny...nurturing as well.

you do look a bit startled, or scared. It's a great picture though.

That is a lovely photo!
Your Mum at the School Gate, brought back that aching feeling when my kids started school. I had it with each one.
