glowing, in more ways than one

13 Feb : fiery dawn

That was the sky just before sunrise on Friday morning. The bushfires in the Yarra Valley are on the left of the photo.

For the last couple of days our view has looked like this ...

14 Feb : smoke filled view

... but today we had a bit of wind and the smoke has mostly cleared away except for a thick brown patch of smoke hanging over the Yarra Valley.

Today is the firstborn's 15th birthday. I do find it hard to believe that I just typed that. We had chish and fips for dinner down by the river and then Mr Soup took all the boys to the Phone Dome to watch Melbourne Victory thrash (hopefully) Adelaide. Sorry Pav and thirdcat and Fiona. (All the ticket takings are going to bushfire relief so it's in a good cause, if that helps).

The birthday boy requested a guitar for his birthday; it arrived this afternoon (acoustic, steel string) and he can play everything on it already, which is good as he and four friends have formed a rock band. He's the lead singer but I suggested he add a guitar so he has something to do with his hands.

He amazes me, my funny Valentine.

Happy birthday to your Valentine's boy. Wow.

Good old chish and fips. We like those too.

Did you see the moon last night? It was glowing red, quite terrifying in a way but awesomely beautiful at the same time.

Your Valentine's boy sounds like a cool kind of chap. Fifteen? How did that happen?

Happy birthday valentine boy!

That scene just before sunrise is full on. I've been thinking a lot about you guys up there this week. We've had lots of smoke today too, eerie.

Oh, happy birthday Teenage Soup....

Ours has been 15 since August.. and while I must say 15 has not been my favorite age for a variety of reasons, I have enjoyed seeing the adult emerging and forging a new and different relationship with him. I see glimpses of who he is becoming...it is however like another birth. Full of hard work and pain with the hope of something beautiful at the end of it. Of course, since I work with 15 year olds all day, maybe my tolerance levels are more of an issue. And it all seems so odd since he was a baby just yesterday it seems.

Enjoy the birthday celebrations and continue to stay safe.

15? My eldest will be 30 this year. Hmm. Happy Birthday, son 1.

Chish and fips? I thought we were the only people who said this!

Glad you're still ok.

Chish and fips? We haven't had those before even though we regularly cast nasturtiums and speak of the tapestries of justice around us.

Best birthday wishes to the lad!

Fifteen is a significant teenage year. So close to being grown ups, but still with lots of support required to finish growing up.

Congratulations to both of you for this milestone.

Happy Birthday Son 1. I hope that this year is full of good times with good friends. You can start dipping your toe in the waters of independence and once you do that there is no going back.

Happy Birthday son #1!
More than glad everyone is safe and sound and celebrating.
You do have a soundproof room for the practicing, yes?

Beautiful photography if rather sad. It's been pretty much the same here with the added delight of a fire in Belgrave to warm our socks with. I love that you have a musician for a son. I'd love to learn the accoustic guitar. One of those 'one day' dreams. I hope you and yours are far enough away from the fires to feel relatively safe. We really must catch up for that cuppa soon. Happy Birthday to your boy!
